The best place to find a temporary or temp-to-hire position is through an employment staffing agency also known as temp agency or temp service. Some of these agencies specialize in finding help for businesses with openings in certain fields. Other temp agencies offer help to companies filling positions in various fields. What does using a temp agency look like?

When you apply for a position through a temporary staffing company, it will look fairly similar to the application and interview process of employment with a company directly. The temporary or temp-to-hire job staffing agencies act as a third party entity between you and the company that is hiring. They provides a benefit to you as the employee and also to the company as the employer. As an employee, should the assignment end or not match your needs, the agency is there to help place you into another position. As an employer, you get the opportunity to truly test employees’ work ethic without the upfront commitment.

The staffing agencies have recruiters or account managers that manage specific company accounts. Their job is to find the best candidate(s) to fill the open position(s) a company has hired them to fill. The first step would be to fill out a job application or make a profile with the temp agency, shortly after a recruiter would be in touch to walk you through next steps. If the agency offers walk ins, I highly recommend visiting to physically join their network of job seekers, especially for those in need of immediate placement.

More often than not the next step is an interview or introduction. These staffing agencies, just like employers, must determine the experience, skill set, work ethic, and etc to best match employee to employer. Depending on the job itself and the preference of the company, in addition to interviewing with the temp agency, you may also have to interview directly with the company for successful placement. 9 times out of 10 though, the agency will have a process to screen you based on the companies needs and afterwards they can either place you on the assignment or help you find other options that better fit your skill set and needs.
